Demystifying Vinyasa with Erin and Marth
Saturday June 8th 1:00p-2:30p
Course Description
Join Erin and Martha for a 90-minute workshop/practice that will teach, encourage, and allow you to experience vinyasa-style yoga. Technically, vinyasa just means "to place in a specific way" but in the US it has come to mean "movement linked with breath." Vinyasa yoga is therefore a practice in which you move with each breath (more or less) to a different pose. The series of poses is often the same, or at least follows an internal logic. Vinyasa yoga is cardiovascularly challenging, not just from the relative speed of the shift from pose to pose, but also because you change levels often (standing to prone, to kneeling, back to standing.) For these reasons, it's not always beginner-friendly. Erin and Martha will spend about 30 minutes on Sun Salutations, which form the backbone of many vinyasa classes. You'll be encouraged to use props and modifications to support you where you are today and to figure out how to make the shapes and the flow work for you. Then there will be a 45-minute vinyasa practice using what you learned, followed by a long savasana and meditation. Our intention is to offer this workshop 4-5 times a year to help you build your skills. To get the most from the workshop, you should be able to move from mountain pose to downward facing dog, not perhaps with proficiency or speed, but be able to do it.
